FCCLA Travels to The Windy City

Over the summer, the FCCLA chapter traveled to the National Leadership Convention in Chicago, Illinois.

“In Chicago, we attended all of the general meetings, many people competed in STAR events and went to breakout sessions, “said senior Caitlin Nelson.

STAR events are a big part of the FCCLA experience.

“STAR events stand for Students Taking Action with Recognition. Students present community service projects to a group of judges to be evaluated,”said senior Elizabeth Cook.

The BRFHS Chapter is represented by Cook and Nelson, as they serve as State FCCLA Officers. Nelson is the Vice President of Public Relations, and Cook is the Vice President of National Correspondence. Cooke pushed herself in order to take her leadership role a step further.

“I was a national officer candidate, where I did an interview, written test, application, and speech,” said Cook. She was joined by 30 other candidates from all across America. Cook was not selected as a national officer, but still represents Wisconsin FCCLA.

When FCCLA members were not competing in STAR events and going to meetings, they did some sightseeing.

“While we were there we went to the Shedd Aquarium, and took a boat tour of the architecture of Chicago,” said Nelson “Some of our members also went to the Bean [a giant statue shaped like a bean, a bean in which you can see yourself.] We also ate at Ed Debevics, a local resturant. It was really, really fun.”

The BRFHS FCCLA Chapter had a good experience in The Windy City and look forward to another year of traveling and leadership. New members are always welcome to join the organization.
