Jake Perner Breaks Yet Another Record

Senior Jake Perner ran over another high school rushing record Friday, September 3 against Tomah.

Coming into the game, Perner knew he needed only 60 yards to break the record. But he didn’t realize until after the game he broke the record because he was more focused on winning.

“After the game I was like, alright, I must have broken[the record].  I ran for six TD’s and ran up and down the field, but not during the game, at anytime, did I realize I broke it,” said Perner who is the varsity team’s running back.

Perner had 18 carries for 227 yards and six TD’s in Tomah’s game to shatter Darren Haag’s old record. He still has a few games to add to his totals.

Perner now sits atop the Black River Falls record books for the career rushing record.

“I had a lot of help when I broke it. It is kind of a team effort more than an individual effort, but it feels really great to be number one in all 99 years that Black River Falls has fielded a football team,” said Perner

Perner not only holds the record for the most rushing yards in a career but also has the most yards in a single season.

Perner and the team have the fans  buying into what Jake and the team have done this far.

“Beautiful [is what Perner is like on the field.] A piece of art; it’s like watching Superman playing football. It’s like watching a team filled with superheroes,” said die-hard fan, senior Eric Helstad.

Like anything in life, most times people aren’t born with loads of talent, they have to work to get it, and that’s what Perner has done to become the running back he is today.

A proven way to get bigger, faster and stronger is by lifting weights. Perner is one that took advantage of the opportunity to lift.

“I started lifting in about 7th grade I think. I go hard when I’m in the weight room and focus on what needs to be accomplished. I try to teach the young ones so they can be solid and healthy athletes. The weight room is not about only making yourself better but encouraging those around you to get better. The team is important in anything you do in life,” said Perner.

Lifting really helps you gain strength, and strength is definitely needed to play football, but it is only one piece to the puzzle. Perner  plays with passion and determination to be the best and contribute to the team.

“It feels great anytime I play with a warrior like Jake. Anytime I can play with him, I’m down. He’s passionate and has his eyes on the prize. Jake runs like Santa’s reindeer; he just keeps on going,” said captain and quarterback senior Greg VonRuden

Perner and the team are definitely off to a great start without a loss thus far.

At the start of the year, the football team always has the goal to make the playoffs and win a conference championship.

“We just want to be the best we can be, Army strong,” said VonRuden.
