Tech Classes: Who Needs Them?

To some, taking technical school classes is an easy way to jump start their college lives and prepare for future careers.

“I am taking the CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) course because I think it will help me with my career in the future. I would like to be a doctor in the future,” said sophomore Brittany Gacek.

But to some it is the college part that is important.

“I am taking tech classes because I want to go to Western Technical College in La Crosse after high school for liberal arts,” said junior Alyssa Anderson.

But that’s not all she is planning for her future.

“I then want to transfer to a UW school. I am not sure what I am going to major in or where exactly I want to go, but taking these classes will help me pursue my dreams,” said Anderson.

Scheduling classes outside of school can be difficult with mandatory high school classes , sports and other extra-curricular activities.

“I am going to take Intro to Sociology on Saturdays starting August 28 through December 12 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. I can’t take it during the fall because I have cheerleading after school,” said Gacek.

But for Anderson it may prove to be too hard.

“It is really hard to schedule tech classes for me because I am in two different sports, FCCLA and it is my senior year. So I don’t want to stress myself out too bad. I want to be able to have fun. But we will see how things work out. I am scheduled for one right now,” said Anderson.

Gacek found a way to fit everything even though it was tough.

“I am taking my CNA course during the spring when I do not have any sports going on and FCCLA is basically over by then,” said Gacek.

But is all this hard work worth it?

“Sociology I hope will be fun, and I am taking it with some friends so that should be a lot of fun–and the CNA course will help me achieve my dream of becoming a doctor. I hope everything works out good,” said Gacek.

It is all about balance according to Anderson.

“Taking tech classes is about balancing your schedule. You have to think about what is more important and which of the things are top priority in your life. It is worth it because it will help me get into Western Technical College and also further my education,” said Anderson.
