Girls Hockey Hits the Ice for the First Time

There is something new happening in hockey this year: a high school girls hockey team has been formed. This is the first high school girls team that BRFHS has ever had.

With this being a first for hockey in Black River Falls, some people have doubt in the team.

“There’s 18 girls on the team and I think it will be good, even though we have some first-year skaters,” said sophomore Anissa Flick.

Most of these girls have been skating together for a long time, and seem to know a lot about each other.

“I think it is cool to be part of the team and I think we’ll do good because a lot of us have skated together, so we are familiar with how each other skates,” said Flick.

Last year the girls played on a U19 girls team. They played some other high school girls team and beat them.

“After beating other high school girls teams in the past, I think that we will do good this year,” said Flick.

The girls have been practicing all week and share the ice with the boys high school team.

“Practices are going great. We have a lot of talent on the team and a couple of new girls that are catching on very quickly,” said sophomore Riley Smith.

While practicing with both the girls and boys team on the ice, the boys get to see how the girls are doing.

“I’m not sure how their going to do. They are young, but they have some good players, like Lydia Cloud and Anissa Flick,” said senior Brandon Skelding.

“It is their first year so it will be a learning experience. They should be a decent team,” said Skelding.

The practice time has been cut down for the boys because of the girls team. The boys used to get the ice from 3:30 to 5:30, but now they only get it from 4p.m. to 5p.m.

“We get full ice for about 45 minutes now, and I’m not really a fan of that, but it is just part of the situation,” said Skelding.

“This change in practice times could really change out season because we might not be getting the practice that we need to be getting,” said Skelding

The girls are really excited to be on the first ever high school girls hockey team in Black River Falls. They plan on having a great season and having some fun along the way.
