School Board Update 5.17.10

The School Board held its final meeting of the 2009-2010 school year on May 17 at the District Office.

Rounding out the 2009-2010 school year, the School Board held its final meeting of the school year on May 17.

Student Senate Report

First on the agenda was the Student Senate report from Senate member junior Emiley Rios. Rios reported that the senior open campus privilege system has been running smoothly.

“So far, about three to five students have been leaving for lunch,” said Rios. “We expect that number to increase with the warmer weather.”

At the end of the school year, the senate will also be discussing the possibility of expanding the open campus opportunity.

So far, the Viva Haiti project has raised over $1,000. At the Variety Show alone, $70 was raised in a “Money Minute.” The money minute involved donating pocket change during the show. On May 26, a Run/Walk for Life will be held to raise money for Viva Haiti, the American Cancer Society and the Humane Society.

BRAGS staffing

The hiring process is underway for a teacher at BRAGS for the 2010-2011 school year. The previous teacher resigned last week. Principal Tom Chambers is optimistic about the hiring process.

“We feel that things are moving along in a positive manner right now,” said Chambers.

Other items

Two parents attended training conducted by CESA #4 to be liaisons for other parents with special education students. This training gave the parents the knowledge to answer any questions that other parents may have about the special education process.

All four applications for foreign exchange students for the 2010-2011 school year were approved.

The board went on to discuss a Title 7 grant in the amount of $66,300. The grant money would be used for Ho-Chunk students to improve health and increase opportunities for Ho-Chunk students. Due to a deadline change that resulted in a missed deadline, the district will not be receiving this grant. The school board will attempt to recover this grant by contacting the state.

The Presidential Academic Assembly was held on May 12. Twenty-nine fifth-graders received the Presidential Academic Award. This is the largest number to receive the award since the program’s inception. According to Gebhardt Elementary Principal Shelly Severson, this is a big accomplishment because the requirements for the award have not changed.

The results of the 2009 WKCE tests were presented to the school board. Out of 13 comparable Wisconsin schools, tenth grade students in Black River Falls ranked 12th in reading, language arts, mathematics and science. In social studies, BRF tenth graders ranked 13th out of 13. In contrast, BRF eighth-graders ranked first in social studies and reading, 8th in language arts and mathematics and 6th in science. The board discussed the significance of these results and what can be done to improve these scores.

The next school board meeting will be held on June 28 at 6:00 pm at the District Office. This is a change from the regularly scheduled meeting.
