Perfect Chemistry Review

Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles is a good story about the difficulties of actually being in a high school relationship with someone out of your clique. Also it shows how sometimes people pretend to be something they are not in order to look perfect to everyone else.

This story is about Brittany Ellis and Alex Fuentes. Brittany is perfect to everyone that doesn’t know her. She is rich, smart, beautiful and she has an amazing home life. But does she? Her 20 year old sister has cerebral palsy. Well, Alex’s home life isn’t that great either. He is a gang member, that watched his father being murdered. They just so happen to be paired up as Chemistry partners and they fall in love. But because she is on the poms squad and he is a gang member everyone looks down on their relationship and thinks it will never work. But will it?

I really like this book, it will make you laugh and cry. I had never read a book by this author so I didn’t really know what to expect but she knocked it out of the park. I like romance novels but they can’t be just about romance. Most of the time they have to have a life lesson in them in order for me to like them. Well this one did. And Elkeles spiced it up with a little Spanish in the book. It’s funny when you have words in the book that are a different language. Most of the time you can kind of figure out what they mean with context clues but it’s hard. And in the this book you know they are not the kind of words you should be saying in school, so you can’t just go and ask the Spanish teachers because that might be a little weird. It’s funny when Alex goes off in Spanish at someone because you can just image him doing it.
Just the personalities of all of the characters mixed makes the book very interesting. Alex is the ego-centric tough guy that also has a sweet side and Brittany is the family oriented, you-don’t-mess-with-me kind of girl. It makes it very amusing to read when they are talking to each other. They even started off playing pranks with each others keys. Brittany putt pink streamers and a pink horn on Alex’s motorcycle. But she did that because he threw her keys in the pool. Brittany started it off though by throwing his keys in the woods when he “kidnapped” her. It was hilarious.
But what I really like about this book is that it makes you realize that high school is high school and yeah there are clicks but it’s how you step out of those clicks that shows what kind of person you are going to be. Throughout your life you are going to have to deal with people you don’t like and you won’t always be with your friends why not prepare now. Show that you are an individual and not some follower that needs someone to tell you how to be and who to date. You should make decisions for yourself and not based on what everyone else will think. That is what this book taught me. But it does it in a funny way and an exciting way. But I warn you this book is for mature people that can handle certain situations.
